New study shows your face can reveal if youre rich or poor
New study shows your face can reveal if youre rich or poorNew study shows your face can reveal if youre rich or poorWe already know that what we wear and what we own can give away where we stand on the social ladder. But apparently there are parts of our socioeconomic status that cant be bought. According to one new study in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, how much money we have iswritten all over our faces.University of Toronto researchers wanted to landsee how much we can infer from facial cues alone, so they recruited 81 college students to look at photographs of 160 white men and women between the ages of 18 and 35.Researchers were purposeful about choosing photos that didnt have loaded signifiers so that participants couldnt make assumptions about tattoos, piercings or facial hair. They also cropped faces so participants couldnt see height, and they put all of the photos in greyscale. All that was left for participants to look at were faces. Half of the people in behauptung photos reported annual incomes over $150,000 and half reported incomes below $35,000.When participants were asked to guess which face was rich and which was poor, they were right mora than half of the time, making the results more than random chance.Whats that on your face? Its wealth.Researchers believe that our mouths may be giving us away. In a separate experiment, researchers had participants guess socioeconomic status based on cropped photos of just eyes or mouths, and people who just had mouths to judge were more accurate than those who had eyes. So mouths, not eyes, may be the windows to our souls.Once we figured out it was these subtle emotional expressions, it makes a lot of sense that the mouth would be showing most of that, because the mouth is what you mostly use, especially with positive emotions, like smiling, the studys lead author Nicholas O. Rule told CNN.In general, any sign of positivity seen on the face correlated to that person being wealthy. That mak es sense. Money can make all the difference between a bright-eyed picture of happiness and a stressed, harried look of help, Im in debt in the worry lines around your mouth. Over time, those feelings become permanently etched on your face.Ones facial musculature may hypertrophy and ones skin may fold in ways that reflect these repeated expressions, resulting in a neutral or resting appearance that resembles the persons baseline, or most frequent, feeling state, researchers wrote. In other words, your lifes experiences, whether good or bad, are telegraphed on your face.Your face muscles can even have lasting repercussions on your employability. When participants were asked to rate the likelihood that the person in the face photo would successfully get a job as an accountant, they chose the rich group over the poor group. This is a troubling finding that shows how first impressions can perpetuate class differences people who look stressed and poor will not get jobs over those who look r elaxed and rich. And this is one first impression thats hard to change. You can change what you wear, but you cant change your face. One possible answer Even if you are facing financial difficulties, work on focusing on the good things in your life and finding ways to relieve your stress. Keeping a positive outlook will be written on your face, which could lead you to be picked when positive financial opportunities become available.

Engineering Students Start Your Engines
Engineering Students Start Your Engines Engineering Students Start Your Engines Steve Daum, collegiate projects manager for SAE International, Warrendale, PA, has watched many students find a career in the automotive industry through the Formula SAE Series, a popular car designing competition. Its definitely evolved over the years. You originally had the tube frame car but now the work on the engine, chassis, and structure has become very sophisticated. Though Daum says they cant race at top speeds for obvious safety reasons, these events still have the feel of high-level competition. Judges look at areas such as cost justification, while a panel plays the role of potential investors. Theyre asking, Why did you do the suspension this way? What research did you do? Why this engine setup? What if we made this change? he says.A lot of things to answer. Other events include a measure of acceleration and a 22-kilometer endurance race. Getting Started A typical team forms when they start the fall semester, and the designing for that years car can take four to five months, Daum says. You may not be making your own tires or microchips but just about everything else is you, he says. Welding all the tubes together, how you want it to be constructed to hold things together. For many students, its their first chance to do anything like this. And some get very serious. Cornell actually wont add anything to their car unless theyve tested it for a year. Daum says the size of the teams vary, usually ranging fromsix to forty. Some have just had four but its usually a struggle that way, he says. University of Kansas, Lawrence was awarded the First Place Overall finish at the 2012 Formula SAE Lincoln competition. Image: SAE.org But beyond competition is the chance for another kind of learning. What isnt covered heavily in many engineering schools is how to manage products, Daum says. You think of this as an engineering competition but its even more a product management competition. Its not all planningsometimes its quick thinking. Take the Rochester Institute of Technology, years ago. When the car got to the line [for competition], it was spraying gas out of the injector, he recalls. Youre not allowed to run that way. They were the tenth car from the end and they asked if they could still run if they could change the injector before their turn. The team members found what they needed and ran to the engine hot area, handing tools and the parts, they somehow changed it in time. Not only did they run the event, they won it. Undergrads, grads, and doctoral students are all allowed to compete, and it may just lead to another finish line. Many people who work in the auto industry are former competitors, he says. Employers want to know how you solve problems and you have the answer many times through this experience. If you were on a good team, then you learned efficiency. Its also easier for the potential employer to relate to someone talking about their experience in a car competition than work they did with a professor on some widget drill. Eric Butterman is an independent writer. Employers want to know how you solve problems and you have the answer many times through this experience. If you were on a good team, then you learned efficiency.Steve Daum, collegiate projects manager, SAE International

The State of American Manufacturing 2019
The State of American Manufacturing 2019 The State of American Manufacturing 2019 The State of American Manufacturing 2019 .mb-2 { margin-bottom: 12px; } U.S. manufacturers had a great 2018, but concerns continue to accompany every positive trend. This starts with output. The value added by manufacturers rose 7 percent in 2018, to nearly $2.4 billion. This represents 11 percent of the American economy. Yet viewed as a percentage of GDP, manufacturing continued to decline, just as it has for the past 70 years. The 2018 tariffs benefitted some producers, but trade suffered. While the United States exports only a small fraction of what it manufactures, those shipments dropped precipitously late last year as China and other nations retaliated against U.S. tariffs. Equally concerning, companies that sourced Chinese parts for their factories had to scramble for replacements to keep their lines running. Employment, a key measure of manufacturing muscle, rose for the fifth consecutive year, adding 1.4 million workers since the bottom of the recession. Today, producers employ nearly 13 million workers, 8.5 percent of the non-farm workforce. This actually understates the number of jobs, since it does not include more than 760,000 contract factory laborers who work for temporary employment firms. Nor does it include outsourced services once done by factory workers, ranging from warehouse management and equipment maintenance to design and engineering. Recommended for You: Manufacturing Takes Flight Manufacturers also worry about replacing 2.9 million baby boomers who will reach retirement age over the next decadeand about finding workers with digital skills to operate increasingly sophisticated machines. Labor Productivity (output/hour) Source: Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor That may mean producers will have to raise wages. The gap between manufacturing (averaging $27.38 per hour) and service jobs ($27.43) has evaporated, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics. Yet health insurance still gives manufacturing the edge: 92 percent of manufacturing employees were eligible for health insurance benefits in 2015, compared with 79 percent for all other businesses, according to a Kaiser Family Foundation survey. U.S. manufacturing productivityand competitivenessrose rapidly since the 1980s. Where it once took 25 workers to generate $1 million in output, it now takes only 6.5, according to Mark Muro, who studies manufacturing at the Brookings Institution. Still, while smart factory technologies promise future growth, manufacturing productivity has hardly budged during the past five years, Muro said. These bright spots and concerns count because manufacturing still matters. It accounts for 70 percent of U.S. private sector RD, 55 percent of its patents, and 60 percent of its exports. Historically, it provided 35 percent of the nations productivity growth. And it employs 30 percent of its engineers. How manufacturers resolve those issues will make a difference. So lets examine them in greater depth. Competitiveness At $2.4 billion, U.S. manufacturing output is higher than ever, second after China, and 2.5 times larger than Japan and Germany combined. While it accounts for 11 percent of U.S. GDPlower than other major competitorsit eclipses the economic output of entire nations, such as Italy, Brazil, South Korea, or Russia. The strength of the U.S. manufacturing sector is no surprise. U.S. producers benefit from a large and wealthy domestic market and a vigorous economy. America also ranks high as a place where producers thrive. It ranks third on Brookings Institutions Global Manufacturing Scorecard and second for innovation on the World Economic Forums Global Competitiveness Report 2017-18. It is home to 10 of the worlds top 20 innovative cities, according to 2thinknows well-regarded Innovation Cities Index. In these reports United States scores high on pro-business policies, business sophistication, innovation, energy costs, higher education, and workforce flexibility. No wonder annual direct foreign investment in manufacturing has tripled to $1.6 trillion since 2006. Listen to the latest episode of ASMETechCast Yet America has weaknesses, too. These include costly health care, lagging primary schools, and low infrastructure spending. Although new tax laws make corporate taxes competitive with other nations, tariff wars have hobbled supply chains. While large cities thrive, Americas rural communitiesonce home to thousands of small manufacturersnever recovered from the 2008 recession. Industrial RD is also a potential concern, according to the Congressional Research Service. RD has grown at lower rates than many competitors. It was also concentrated in such high-tech sectors such as pharmaceuticals, electronics, and aerospace. In other countries, more research dollars go into such medium-technology sectors as automotive and machinery manufacturing. The United States, like other developed nations, also faces low productivity growth. It averaged roughly 4 percent between 1990 and 2007, but has risen only 0.7 percent annually since. No one is certain why. Some argue that new technologies are not as powerful as past advances, or that it takes longer to realize their gains. Others claim data fails to capture the increasingly important service element in manufactured goods. Despite these clouds, more than 92 percent of manufacturers reported that they were optimistic about their companys outlook in 2018. It was the highest total in the National Association of Manufacturers surveys 20-year history. Trade Western Michigan-based RoMan Manufacturing, which makes welding transformers, buys almost exclusively from U.S. vendors and sells 85 percent of its products in North America. Yet its struggles show how deeply the Trump Administrations trade wars have impacted many manufacturers. When President Trump imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum in March 2018, RoMan co-owner and CEO Robert Roth knew that domestic suppliers would raise prices. Roth would like to pass those costs onto his customers, but then he risks losing bids to offshore vendors using cheaper aluminum. So he may have to absorb the cost himself. RoMan also buys coiled electrical steel magnetic cores for transformers domestically. When steel tariffs pushed up their prices, Roth started importing cores from an Israeli producer to remain competitive. The Israelis buy untariffed electrical steel, which costs less, Roth explained. When they export cores to us, its not tariffed because its considered a fabricated product. The tariffs let fabricated steel products into the United States at a lower price, because theres no tariff on the base material. Others have similar problems. Steel tariffs boosted the cost of Capital Cookings high-end ranges by $800 to $1,000, making them less competitive against imports. Steel beer keg maker American Keg had to lay off workers. Union Pacific paid $6 million in duties for a boatload of a grade of Japanese steel rail not made in the United States. The Trump Administration placed tariffs on steel and aluminum tariffs to jumpstart U.S. metal production and on Chinese products to force China to negotiate on issues like forced technology transfer and export subsidies. These steps partially succeeded. Domestic steel shipments rose 5 percent in 2018 and several steelmakers announced plans for new capacity. America and China are negotiating, though the outlines of any final deal are unknown. Meanwhile, thousands of companies like RoMan, Capital, and Union Pacific are left to figure it out. Roth, however, has a different plan. His firm spent the past two years reengineering his transformers to take out 40 percent of their cost. Even though we saw steel prices rise, we still lowered our selling price dramatically, he said. Were trying to direct automakers to the new product and show them the opportunity. Jobs By now, almost everyone knows that while the United States lost 4.3 million manufacturing jobs between 2001 and 2019, production reached historic levels. Yet economists are still debating why this happened. Some researchers assert that computers, robots, and automation have made factories more efficient. Automakers, for example, replaced human welders with robots and battalions inventory clerks with computers. The same scenario has been repeated in smaller factories, too. Since the 1940s, factory workers as a percent of the labor force has been declining at a steady rate. Others are skeptical. The industry began automating 70 years ago, yet the number of manufacturing workers remained stable until 2001, when China received preferential tariffs after joining the World Trade Organization. Aided by government subsidies and low-cost labor, some Chinese imports sold for less than raw material costs in the United States. Between 2001 and 2016, about 80,000 U.S. factories closed their doors. Rural areas, once populated by many small factories, were devastated. Millions of jobs disappeared, with few options for similar work nearby. But while economists argue over why jobs have declined, there is one fact they all agree upon: who gets hired has changed. Between 2000 and 2016, when overall manufacturing was falling 20 percent, employment was rising for workers with at least an associate degree. This may be due to the growing digitalization of manufacturing. Brookings Institution economist Mark Muro tracked the digital content of 545 professions and rated them on a scale of 100. Software developers, as one might imagine, scored 94 in 2016. Among manufacturing professions, engineers ranked around 70. The surprise was the growth of digital job content among shop floor workers between 2002 and 2016. Among tool and die makers, it rose to 51 in 2016, from 3 in 2002. Those in advanced manufacturing rose to 39, from 24; and basic goods manufacturing reached 33, from 15. When manufacturers talk about a skills gap, this is at least part of what they mean. Not only must they replace 2.9 million retiring baby boomers over the next decade, but they also must hire new types of workers with digital skills to replace the old. Deloitte warns that gaps in skills, especially digital skills, may leave as many as 2.4 million jobs unfilled over the next decade. It looks tough for manufacturers, but it could mean more opportunity for workers with the right training. Automation For manufacturers, the future is now. Take, for example, smart factories, also known as Industry 4.0 or digital manufacturing. This September, Germanys EM0 trade show will showcase 50 networked metalworking machineswith a difference. Those machines will all connect to a single data hub, but they will be monitored by controllers from different companies, said Wilfried Schfer, executive director of the German Machine Tool Builders Association, which runs EMO. This is a big step forward. Smart factory deliverablescombinations of Internet of Things sensors, cloud computing, Big Data analysis, and artificial intelligenceare only a few years old. Until now, they were the proprietary province of such automation leaders as GE, Siemens, Bosch, and their deep-pocketed customers. The development of plug-and-play standards gives smaller producers a way to get smarter without breaking the bank. Smart systems can provide new insights into machinery and workflows, and even use AI to schedule jobs, assign machines, and route parts autonomously. Either way, they yield real-world savings. Rockwell Automation, for example, ran a Big Data analysis of sensor data from a large coffee roaster and found it could slash the 100 excess machines it needed to keep production steady during maintenance turnarounds, said the companys director of advanced technology David Vasko. In Michigan, Kuka Systems linked more than 60,000 devices (including 259 robots) and business software. Its single assembly line runs 24/7 and churns out one of eight different unpainted Jeep Wrangler body types every 77 seconds. Other technologies are also transitioning to the shop floor. Industrial robot use is rising rapidlybut industry also bought more than 60,000 autonomous mobile robots to deliver products and parts in warehouses and on the factory floor last year. Meanwhile, large companies like BMW, Whirlpool, Boeing, and Adidas are using 3D printers to make metal and plastic production and spare parts. Adidas, for example, plans to print 1 million sneaker soles this year. One day, speculates Srivats Ramaswami, CTO of 42Q, a vendor of cloud-based manufacturing software, smart automation may enable wealthier nations to build factories near their engineers and markets without worrying about competition from low-wage offshore producers. Dealing With an Overly Talkative Co-worker - The Muse
Dealing With an Overly Talkative Co-worker - The Muse Dealing With an Overly Talkative Co-worker Iâm all for chatting with your colleagues. It builds rapport, which in turn builds your relationship and can make you a better collaborator (and more comfortable asking for professional advice). It can make your office a warmer, friendlier place to work, and it might even save your job. Those who can âmake conversation with a wallâ often excel in networking situations and connecting with intimidating clients. But to be honest, they can also annoy the heck out of their co-workers. So, what are you to do when you have a colleague who just loves to dive right into a daily gabfest rather than inquiring if itâs a good time? (Spoiler alert: Itâs not.) Read on for three things you can say to an overly chatty co-worker who just canât seem to catch a hint. 1. âI know!â âIgnore her and sheâll go away,â is terrible advice. So is, âlook busy.â I understand the thinking behind it: Youâre afraid if you engage, youâll encourage your colleague to linger. Sure, if you ask tons of questions and beg your co-worker to elaborate, sheâll hang around and continue the conversation. But if she regularly stops by your desk to chat, odds are sheâs trying to connect with you. And dismissing her will make her think she needs to try harder (read: stop back again after lunch). So, if you have a minute, stop what youâre doing, focus on her, and make a relevant, declarative statement. âOh wow- I canât believe it took you 20 minutes to get through the line at Starbucks!â Then, when she stops by later, you can smile and say that you are really slammed and donât have any more time to chat today. (Busy when she stops by the first time? Reverse your reactions.) By occasionally listening to this colleague, youâll show youâre interested in connecting- but can also pick and choose when youâll make time to visit. 2. âLetâs discuss this another time.â Sometimes you have a few minutes for a gabfest, but instead of your co-worker discussing the usual (Monday Night Football, vacation plans- whatever it may be), she starts telling you about her date last night. Yes, companies have sexual harassment trainings about what should and shouldnât be a topic of discussion, but thereâs always a gray area- think: you discussed Kim Kardashianâs Paper magazine cover yesterday but donât necessarily want to hear a play-by-play of date night. While you should communicate that this isnât office conversation, there are ways to do it without coming off like a chaperone saying, âThatâs not appropriate.â If this is a colleague who is also your friend, you can correct her in an equally chatty way. Try this: âJill, I totally want to hear this story- can we do it over cocktails instead of in earshot of the whole office?â If youâre not close with this person, acknowledge the gray area as you set boundaries, and then quickly change the subject. âYou know- I know we discussed celebrities and nudity the other day, but Iâd rather not talk about romantic lives in the office. In other news, did you see Prince Georgeâs Christmas photo?â This way you can exchange a few pleasantries and move on. 3. âIâm not very chatty.â The two phrases above stem from the same general advice that the best way to handle a chatty colleague is to chat with him a bit, and then go about your work. (Because the payoff you get by being friendly and building strong relationships can be worth a few minutes out of your day.) But this advice doesnât always work. Sometimes, once the floodgates have opened, itâs impossible to close them. So what youâre looking for is a kind, professional way to shut your co-worker down- to stop the conversation before it starts. In this case, take the escape hatch approach and say something along the lines of, âYou know- Iâm not very chatty.â (Itâs the office version of the classic, âItâs not you; itâs me.â) If heâs always talking about The Voice, tell him youâre not big on TV. Or tell her you have trouble refocusing if you step outside of a âwork mindset,â so youâd prefer not to socialize in the office. It wonât win you any Miss Congeniality prizes, but it should get your colleague to stop bothering you. Still canât a catch a break? If your requests for less banter fall on deaf ears and your colleague is a constant distraction, itâs time to bring the matter to the attention of HR or your supervisor. If your co-worker is causing you this level of distress, odds are others find her to be a nuisance as well. Someone should talk to her about reining it in for the sake of her professional development. Part of being successful is building relationships, balancing your needs with the needs of others, and navigating different personalities and work styles. You have to deal with all of these issues when working with an extra chatty colleague. So visit on occasion, and draw boundaries the rest of the time. Photo of child courtesy of Shutterstock.

How to Negotiate Your Salary With Your Current Employer
How to Negotiate Your Salary With Your Current Employer How to Negotiate Your Salary With Your Current Employer Hereâs How to Negotiate Salary With Your Current Employer If you want to ask your boss for a raise, hereâs how to do it. Negotiating salary makes even the most seasoned professionals nervous. The idea of walking into a room to face off with your boss or manager in an attempt to justify why they should pay you more is not a pleasant thought. There's high potential for emotions to boil over, and things can go awry quite quickly. In addition, many professionals wonder if they even know how to correctly negotiate salary with their current employer. Before you set up a meeting with your boss, a whirlwind of questions may rush through your mind: Is my claim justified? What if my boss gets upset and lets me go? Will this change my relationship with the company? What happens if my employer says no? Do I even deserve a raise? Can I support my lifestyle if I don't get this raise in pay? It's funny where our minds will go when we're faced with a stressful situation like this but don't let your brain play games with you. You deserve to ask for that raise, and these tips will help you feel more confident while negotiating your pay. How to ask your boss for a raise 1. Do your research Research the market rate for your current role, using sites such as Glassdoor, Salary.com, or PayScale. What is the average salary for the role when you factor in your years of experience, your industry, the size of your company, and the company's location? How does your current salary compare? Use this information to help you create a target salary that you can share with your boss. 2. Create your brag book Often times, your boss' or manager's knowledge of all of the positive contributions you've made to the company will be limited. It's not that they don't care about what you do; they are just busy and don't have the bandwidth to keep track of every little thing you do each day. If your boss is any good at their job, they learned to empower and trust their team, which means they aren't 100 percent in touch with your day-to-day contributions to the company. Because of this, it will be your job to make sure that your supervisor is aware of the value you add to the company. In the weeks leading up to the salary negotiation meeting, you'll want to compile a list of the things you do within your role that add value, also known as creating your brag book. Rank your achievements in order of the impact they have on the bottom line, highlighting areas where you go beyond your general responsibilities. 3. Quantify your achievements Within your brag book, if there's a number you can attach to a line item, make sure to do so. For example, if you developed a process that eliminates paper waste and thus saves the company $200,000 annually, that's something you'll want to note. The more details you can provide, the better position you'll be in to negotiate effectively. Compiling this list will help you present yourself as a serious asset to the company one it can't afford to lose to the competition. Use this as leverage in your negotiations. You have to be careful with what you say, though. Don't embellish and certainly don't make anything up. There's a good chance your facts will get checked, and if you make too bold a claim that turns out to be false, you not only won't get the raise, but you'll end up being under suspicion for the remainder of your time within that role. 4. Don't be overeager You don't have to take the first offer that's laid out on the table. One common mistake in negotiations is that one of the parties falls in love right away. By telling your employer how much you love being at the company and how you'd never consider leaving, you've already left a lot of dollars off the table. The idea is to let the company know you do enjoy working there, while at the same time making it clear that you know your services are so valuable you'd be an asset to any company who'd hire you. When the first offer comes across the table, it's important that you don't get too excited (or at least that you don't show it). You can always go back to that original offer if you don't get what you want. Give it a shot and let your employer know you think you're worth more by putting a counteroffer on the table. This shows your employer that you possess assertiveness but don't be rude or pushy about it. Be sure that you do it with respect, but it's definitely worth a shot. The worst that could happen is that the company sticks with the first offer. Not accepting too quickly can also set the tone for future salary negotiations. If an employer senses that you'll cave at the first offer, future negotiations just got a lot more difficult for you. Instead, let your employers know that you understand the process and you know you have options. The first offer will typically be lower than the actual amount your supervisor has been approved to offer you, and possessing that knowledge can put you in a much better position when you enter into negotiations. 5. Don't burn bridges It's important for you to keep in mind that whatever the outcome of negotiating salary may be, you'll still be working in that same job the next day with that same individual as your boss. For that reason, it's important that you don't go into negotiations with an arrogant attitude or otherwise paint yourself in a negative light. One of the best tips on how to negotiate salary with your current employer is to watch what you say and avoid saying the wrong thing. It can be difficult to turn things around once you've gone down a bad path. If you let your emotions get the best of you, you risk saying something you'll regret. Salary negotiations aren't personal, so be sure to avoid looking at them in that manner. Don't burn bridges by saying something you can't take back. Unless you have a counteroffer on the table from another company, the person with whom you're negotiating will most likely be overseeing your work for at least a little while longer. There's no reason for you to make your supervisor-employee relationship uncomfortable. Takeaways By taking these things into consideration and knowing how to negotiate salary, you'll put yourself in a much better position to receive acceptance to the demands you present during your negotiations. You'll also show your employer a new skill you possess. Skilled negotiators are highly sought after in the business world, and your ability to come across as skilled in this area will position you for more than just a raise it'll position you for potential promotions and new job opportunities, as well. Management Strategy to Help Employees Implement Change
Management Strategy to Help Employees Implement Change Management Strategy to Help Employees Implement Change Youve finally made it to the Implementation Stage of making and managing change within your organization. Yes, you get to take action during this stage. You can if you follow these recommendations and accomplish first, the four initial stages that build employee commitment to change. The 5th Stage of Managing Change: Implementation In this stage, the change is managed and moves forward. Your overall goal at this implementation stage is to maintain your constancy of purpose. You will want to check to make sure that the changes are having the desired effects. You will need to redesign your organizational systems to support the changes. You will also need to provide recognition and rewards (positive consequences) to people who exhibit the changed behaviors you were hoping to see. What to Watch Out for During the Implementation Stage During the Implementation Stage, your organization will experience the greatest disequilibrium. Change inevitably disrupts existing structures that allocate power, status, and control. The changes you make will also not go exactly as planned. Change usually takes much longer than organizations anticipate. New people and new technology can take up to 18 months to work effectively in your organization. Smaller changes that disrupt employee habits can take a shorter amount of time but they can initiate stress and concerns among employees. You need to address the stress and concerns if you expect your change implementation to ever work. What to Do Change agents, senior managers, and managers must prepare employees for systems that will not immediately produce the desired results. During this stage, change leaders must ensure that the following activities are completed. You will want to provide additional training as needed Specific technical training that was not anticipated earlierContinuation of human relations skills for all that include conflict resolution, communication, listening and more.Training in problem identification and problem resolutionManagement training in leadership and in technology implementation, if necessary, and in other areas associated with the innovation and changes that you have introduced.Problem-solving groups and teams are created to address any issues you are experiencing in the implementation. Schedule total staff reviews of the changes and team progress periodically.Help all staff members to enroll in and own the changes via involving them, encouraging their participation in planning, and making personal commitments to the contribution that you need from them to make the new systems succeed. Leaders Ensure the Implementation Plan Is Moving Forward During the Implementation Stage, when managing change, the organization must use problem-solving techniques to determine whether the change is having the desired effects. The leaders of the change effort must take the following steps to assure that the changes are successful. Measure the Results From the Changes Design a system to measure the effects of the change or the improvement on your work systems, people interaction, customer interaction, and any component of your organization that is involved or affected. An example is how has the change affected communication between your departments. How much extra work are the employees investing in the new work systems that were caused by the changes? You will also want to measure the success of the change overall. You will want to demonstrate that the change is producing the results for which it was intended. Or, if the changes are not, youâll want to make course corrections along the way. Ensure that the changes are actually solving the problems that they were designed to address. Your efforts expended in measuring the effects of the changes will help you with this initiative. Address Remaining Problems Quickly Address any remaining sources of continuing resistance and conflict. This is many times the employees who have not been involved in the implementation of the changes up to this point. Ensure that any problems that are caused by the implementation and transition are addressed as quickly as possible. They wonât solve themselves and, if left unresolved, they will fester just under the surface. Festering problems rear their ugly heads at the most inconvenient times and undermine the success of your changes. Communicate and Provide Feedback So Employees Know What Is Happening Provide feedback to all members of your organization on the progress that is happening and the current status of the change efforts. You need to wisely practice this old adage: Tell them what you are going to tell them, tell them, then, tell them what you just told them. You do this to ensure that your employees are clear about the progress of the change implementation. In turn, this ensures their support of the efforts. Respond rapidly to any problems that are identified when you share feedback about the progress of the change. Your employees are in the best position to identify the problems and pain points that may undermine the success of your implementation of the changes. Fine Tune Your Measurements Complete and fine tune the changes and the systems that you are using for measuring the effects of the change in your organization and on your employees. If you expect the implementation of the changes to last, to earn employee support, and to truly affect improvement in your organization, you must demonstarte that the changes were, indeed, necessary and wise. The Bottom Line If you incorporate these measures when you are in the Implementation Stage of your change efforts, you will increase the probability that you will effectively apply the changes within your organization. It doesnt get any better than that. Missing any of these success factors undermines your chances for a positive outcome. Remember another old adage as you move through this stage of implementation with your employees. Benjamin Franklin said, Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn. See the six stages involved in change management.

Must-Have Skills and Traits for Working as a Fit Model
Must-Have Skills and Traits for Working as a Fit Model Must-Have Skills and Traits for Working as a Fit Model You know that sweater everyone compliments you on? Or that dress you never want to take off? Well, thereâs a reason why you love those clothes so much. Before garments hit the stores, they have to go through a rigorous design process that takes the garment from a simple concept to a finished product. At the heart of the process is a very important person who few people know about: the fit or fitting model. A fit model is a behind-the-scenes model, who basically test drives clothing for a designer. Acting as a live mannequin, he or she can help a companyâs design team see how the garment looks and moves on a real, live person. Fit modeling isnât as glamorous as, say, fashion modeling (youâll never appear in a photo shoot or a runway show) but many models find it satisfying to work side-by-side with the people who make fashion a reality. Intrigued? Here are a few basic requirements to get a job as a fit model. Have a Well-Proportioned Body With Industry Standard Measurements First and foremost, all fit models must have well-proportioned bodies that meet industry standard measurements. For female models, clients usually look for someone 5â4ââ to 5â9ââ with measurements of 34-26-37. For male fit models, clients generally prefer a height of 6â1ââ or 6â2ââ with measurements of 39-34-39. (Please note that these numbers represent a typical fit model. Actual numbers may vary from client to client, as everyoneâs needs are different. Plus, there is also a demand for childrenâs, teen, petite, plus size, and even maternity fit models!) Have a Flexible Schedule Fit modeling isnât a 9â"5 job. Shifts vary from week to week depending on the season and the number of samples that are ready to fit, and you may have to work on an âon-callâ basis. Be Physically and Mentally Strong You may be asked to stand still for extended periods of time while the designers pin, cut, pull and stretch the clothes into perfection, or walk around to give the designers a better idea of how the garment moves. You may even have to pretend to get into a car, dance up a storm, sit at a desk, or pretty much anything that a real customer would do. And because fittings typically last anywhere from 3â"5 hours, you need to be in good physical shape to get the job done right. Be Able to Work With an Audience If youâre the shy type, who isnât comfortable getting dressed (and undressed!) in front of others, then fit modeling might not be the best job for you. Designers and garment technicians will want to see how easily you can get in and out of a garment to spot small technical errors, like a zipper being too short or armholes being too snug to slip into comfortably. Be Knowledgeable About Fit and Fashion Trends Fit models arenât just living mannequins. More than anything, theyâre there to put themselves in the customersâ shoes and provide the designers with valuable feedback about the fit, feel, and movement of the garment. Is it comfortable? Is the fabric too scratchy? Can you raise an arm without ripping a seam? Do the shoulders pull? Does it ride up too high (or too low) during everyday activities? These small details can make or break a garment, so you must be an excellent communicator who is comfortable expressing your opinions to the client. If you donât have a technical fashion background or any design experience, itâs a good idea to take a few classes to learn the basics. The more you know about what goes into making a garment, the better feedback youâll be able to give. And that, of course, means youâll be hired and rehired time and time again. Have the Right Connections As with all types of modeling, the more exposure you have, the better chance youâll have of making it in the industry. By submitting your photos to a reputable model scouting agency, such as ?ModelScouts.com, youâll be seen by the worldâs top modeling agencies. Itâs a safe, legitimate, and affordable way to make the connections you need to kickstart your fit modeling career.

Your ability to focus has probably peaked Heres how to stay sharp
Your ability to focus has probably peaked Hereâs how to stay sharp Your ability to focus has probably peaked Hereâs how to stay sharp Having a hard time focusing lately? Youâre not alone. Research shows interruptions occur about every twelve minutes in the workplace and every three minutes in university settings. In an age of constant digital interruptions, it is no wonder youâre having trouble ignoring distractions. In their book, The Distracted Mind: Ancient Brains in a High-Tech World, Dr. Adam Gazzaley, a neuroscientist, and Dr. Larry Rosen, a psychologist, explain how our ability to pay attention works and what we can do to stay focused. It turns out, attention isnât as simple as it seems. In fact, paying attention involves two separate functions: âenhancementâ (our ability to focus on things that matter) and âsuppressionâ (our ability to ignore the things that donât). Interestingly, enhancement and suppression are not opposites, they are distinct processes in the brain. From The Distracted Mind: Ancient Brains in a High-Tech World:Although it may seem counterintuitive, we now appreciate that focusing and ignoring are not two sides of the same coin [â¦] it is not necessarily true that when you focus more on something, you automatically ignore everything else better. We have shown in our lab that different [brain] networks are engaged when we focus compared to when we ignore the same thing. These processes are so separate, in fact, there are different networks of brain structures that carry out their respective functions, each of which is critical for attention. If either of these brain processes is impaired, we lose focus. For example: we struggle with attention when we are tired, drunk, and, most notably, as we age.Older adults are biologically more distractible than young adults. Personal anecdotes and scientific evidence demonstrate that our attentional capacity peaks near age twenty and diminishes over time. Gazzaley discovered that age-related declines are caused by a deficit in the suppression (ignoring) process. From The Distracted Mind: Ancient Brains in a Hi gh-Tech World:Our main finding in this study was that, interestingly, older adults [focus on] relevant information as well as twenty-year-olds. Where older adults suffered a deficit was in suppressing the irrelevant information ⦠We discovered that their main attentional issue was that they are more distractible than younger adults. The attentional decline we experience as we age has more to do with our inability to filter out distractions, not our lack of concentration. If you think itâs hard to pay attention now, just wait until you age a few more years. To improve our ability to pay attention, we need to both remove distraction (especially as we age) as well as boost our capability to focus on one task at a time. Hereâs how:How to eliminate distractionHave you ever noticed someone squinting their eyes in an attempt to recall something? Turns out closing your eyes to remember may actually work. Why this quirky technique is effective tells us something important about how the brain filters information. When your eyes are closed, your brain isnât working as hard to filter out visual information. Instead of struggling to ignore everything in your field of view, your brain can devote more attention towards scanning your memory. Gazzaley conducted an experiment to see what type of visual information is the most distracting. He and his team asked volunteers to remember details while looking at one of three visual scenes: a plain grey screen, a busy picture, or with their eyes closed. From The Distracted Mind: Ancient Brains in a High-Tech World:The results of this experiment revealed that their ability to remember details [ â¦] was significantly diminished when their eyes were open and there was a picture in front of them, compared to either their eyes being shut, or their eyes being open while they faced a grey screen. This experiment, along with others, provides evidence that cluttered and disorganized environments are more distracting than organized one s. Spaces filled with visual distractions force our brains to work harder to filter out superfluous information. When facing a pending deadline that you desperately need to focus on, clearing your desk and workspace to make it like the grey screen can increase your focus. Try clearing your virtual desktop of clutter as well. Limit yourself to one monitor, one browser tab or window and one computer program or app at a time.Removing distraction is important to maintain our focus as we age, but we also need to boost our capability to concentrate on one task at a time. Hereâs how:How to boost focus Gazzaley and Rosen say some activities may boost cognition and attention by stimulating the brainâs ability to strengthen and reorganize existing neural connections, a process called neuroplasticity.Activities that may boost cognition include physical exercise, meditation and spending time in nature. Recent research also finds that some cognitive exercises may also help. Although there are many brain training programs, some of which have over-promised and under-delivered, some scientists believe a new crop of clinically validated programs may soon come online. From The Distracted Mind: Ancient Brains in a High-Tech World:Cognitive exercises are an attempt to improve brain function by harnessing our brainâs inherent plasticity, rather than by explicitly teaching a strategy or a skill. Most training programs attempt to accomplish this goal not just through repetitive task engagement, but also through adaptivity. For Gazzaley and Rosen, adaptivity is key. Just as athletes must adju st their exercise routines as they grow stronger; cognitive exercise programs must also adjust to how well, or how poorly, the participant is doing in the task. Personalized adjustments make the training more successful.New research shows the promising effects of cognitive exercise programs in older adults and healthy populations. Gazzaley and Rosen caution that while the research is encouraging, more clinical trials are needed to prove medical benefits. However, many in the industry are hopeful doctors will one day prescribe game-like cognitive exercises as part of a healthy brain training regimen. In the meantime, certain currently available video game titles may actually be good for brain health and improve cognition. From The Distracted Mind: Ancient Brains in a High-Tech World:They are designed with a primary goal of engendering high levels of immersion, engagement, and enjoyment for the players, [â¦] They do not tend to focus on one specific cognitive skill, as exercises usually do, but rather expose players to multiple demands that challenge a broad range of abilities.A 2003 study of video-game play linked better cognition and higher scores on attention and memory tests in gamers vs non-gamers. But not all video games are created equal.Non-gamers who played the first person shooter game, Medal of Honor, one hour per day for 10 days showed improvements in cognition, while the ones who played Tetris did not. From The Distracted Mind: Ancient Brains in a High-Tech World:[The researchersâ] conclusion was that the nature of action video game play was critical in âforcing players to simultaneously juggle a number of varied tasks (detect new enemies, track existing enemies and avoid getting hurt, among others).Video games may give you a boost, but not every off-the-shelf game will do the trick. The difference between the games that work and the ones that donât give us information into how the brain changes in response to its environment.Video game s good for building focus create environments that are fast-paced, interactive, adaptive and have complex reward and gaming structures. Like a brain playground. In 2013, Gazzaley verified that a custom-designed cognitive video game, NeuroRacer, improves cognition in older adults. Dr. Gazzaleyâs research led to a proprietary technology platform to measure and improve certain executive functions. In the future, cognitive video games will be like âNeuro Cross Fit Trainingâ as Gazzaley calls it. They will combine elements of physical activity, meditation, and cognitive exercise rolled into one game.In the meantime, we can do our part to keep our attentional focus sharp by first reducing distractions to improve our suppression capabilities, and then beefing-up the brainâs enhancement functions through activities like exercise, meditation, outdoor time, and immersive video games. We can boost our ability to concentrate by doing just one thing well at a time.Hereâs the gist: Researchers say our ability to pay attention is equal parts focusing and ignoring. Irrelevant information bogs down our ability to suppress distraction, especially as we age. To increase our ability to focus, researchers suggest both boosting our ability to concentrate as well as reducing distraction. Hereâs how: To reduce distraction: Use one screen, one browser window, and one computer program at a time. Keep your physical and virtual desktop tidy. To increase our ability to concentrate: Exercise, meditation, and spending time in nature may help boost cognitive control. Some cognitive exercises and immersive action video games also seem to improve our ability to focus.
